Where does the Hex Bar get its name from?
The Hex Bar is a classic strength training tool. It gets its name from its special shape, which is reminiscent of a hexagon. The Hex Bar is also known as the "Trap Bar" because many classic bodybuilders used it to perform shrugs in order to emphasize the trapezius muscle.

Unlike the Olympic bar, with the trap bar you don't stand behind the bar, but "in" the stage, as it has a recess.
This hex bar measures 42 x 64 cm (LxW) and is made entirely of steel. This makes the bar very durable and extremely robust.

It can withstand training even with heavy weights.

Which exercises are performed with the Hex Bar?
A trap bar, such as the Olympic Combo Hex Bar presented here, can be used to perform a range of traditional strength and athletic training exercises.

First and foremost is the deadlift. More and more trainers are switching from the classic Olympic bar to the Olympic Combo Hex Bar. With the Trap Bar, the exercise can be performed in different variations. Classic deadlifts, but also Romanian deadlifts or even straight leg deadlifts can be performed.

All variations have their justification.
The classic deadlift is one of the most important exercises in the training process. Deadlifts on the trap bar are often called "hex bar squats" because the movement is also very similar to the squat. Deadlifts increase strength throughout the body. Especially in the legs, core and back.

The shrugs mentioned at the beginning are a traditional bodybuilding exercise. Here, the trap bar is lifted and then pulled upwards with straight arms and only from the neck. A proven exercise for hypertrophy (muscle building) in the neck.
You can also practise the farmer's walk from the same position. To do this, hold the weight and walk a predefined distance.

This exercise comes from the Strongmen area and is a very functional exercise for general strength in the body, as well as for walking upright.

In addition to the classic hex bar deadlift and hex bar squat, you can also perform another basic strength training exercise: Hex Bar Shoulder Press.

The straight handles make this variation easier to perform for many people, as there is less strain on the wrists.

And bent-over rowing and calf raises are also possible with the Hex Bar.

What advantages does the Hex Bar offer over conventional barbells?
Hex bar exercises are a proven alternative for many classic strength exercises. The special design of the bar gives you more space for your hips with every movement.

This means that your hip mobility does not have to be as great.
This is one of the biggest advantages of the Hex Bar.
Many exercisers have limited hip mobility (especially beginners), which is often caused by too much sitting or previous injuries.

In addition to functional mobility training, training with the Hex Bar is a great way to perform the same basic exercises for the greatest training effect.

When training with the Olympic Combo Hex Bar, the focus is not in front of the body, but in the middle of the body. You stand in the bar and not behind it. This also makes technique training much easier.

Many trainers swear by the Olympic Combo Hex Bar for back pain during deadlifts/squats. It allows you to stay much more upright in the back. As a result, the lever on the lower back is not as great and it is less strained.

Barbell bar vs. Olympic Combo Hex Bar
There is no "better" or "worse" when it comes to the question of whether to use an Olympic bar or an Olympic combo hex bar.
Rather, both variants are useful and should be used in a holistic and qualitative strength/functional training program.
However, Hex Bar exercises are a particularly useful option if you want to work on your technique and/or have limited mobility in your hips or pain in your lower back.
