Still a lot of people train in the studio or at home without dumbbell locks. For a variety of reasons. Some people don't even know that "you do it that way", others don't think they need it, others find it too cumbersome and others don't want to spend money on it.
These are capital mistakes. As long as everything goes well, of course nothing happens. But just one carelessness is enough with barbell training, and the damage can quickly be great. For example, when you press the bench, the weight is pushed into the air directly above the head/neck. Anyone who loses their balance here because weight plates are loose is extremely endangering their health.
To avoid injury, fasteners must be used - everything else is unprofessional and dangerous.
What types of closures are there?
One type of closure that's fallen into disrepute is the star-shaped closure. You have to tighten the cap here every time. That's why many athletes have stopped using closures because it's simply very elaborate.
But there are other systems that offer the same level of security. So are the set collars. They have extreme pressure on the bar, so they secure very well. Even with higher weights they play well - once tightened.
The folding clasps are a modern variant for barbells. They're not iron, but they can withstand high weights with just one click. They're certainly the best compromise in terms of security and effort.
Spring locks are found on barbells and dumbbells. They're just compressed and pushed onto the bar. This also makes them very easy to install and suitable for quick changes.
To which products do the closures fit?
With dumbbells, spring locks are almost always sufficient. This also applies to barbells, but with a higher weight it is better to switch to a different solution.
Folding fasteners are the next variant here. They are very easy to use and can withstand high weights during barbell training.
The safest variant is the set collars. They are tightened by Allen key and offer a very good grip.
